Bridge Construction

Our group has decided to build a beam bridge. We decided that this would be the best bridge to build because of the simplicity, which would allow for more error.
Kylie, Wes, and I are trying to meet at lunch hours to finish the bridge, so far the construction is going a lot slower than I had hoped.

Web Quest

1-1. The difference between instantaneous and average is that instantaneous is at a certain moment in time and average is over a period of time. The speedometer on a car shows you the instantaneous speed of your vehicle.

1-2. When you travel at the same over a period of time. 10m\s*30s = 300 meters over 30 seconds

1-3. Acceleration - is a vector quantity that is defined as the rate at which an object changes it's velocity. An object is accelerating if the velocity is changing.  three different units for acceleration are m/s/s, mi/hr/s, km/hr/s, and an extra one is m/s2 (the 2 should be an exponent). you have traveled a total of  70 meters after accelerating at 7m/s for 4s.

2-1. The slope of a postion-time graph is equal to the velocity that the object was traveling. If the slope increases on a position time graph then the velocity increases as well.

2-2.  Exercise 1= -3.0m/s Exercise 2 = 4 m/s. the easiest way to explain the way to get the answer is to show you the formula slope = (y2-y1) / (x2-x1). then you can just use the equation to find the answer.

2-3. The slope of a v/t graph is equal to acceleration. (Sorry can draw on blogger.) If the graph has a line that is moving up and to the right then the object is accelerating, and if the object is moving down and to the right then the object is decelerating.  c, d, h

3-1. Free fall is an object that is falling on the sole influence of gravity. 9.80 m/s is the rate at which an object falls on earth.

3-2. The object is accelerating. the object is accelerating at acceleration = (7.55-3.90) / (2.01-1.00) =      3.61 m/s.

Optimizing Performance

I think that some of the things that we could do to optomize performance of the vehicle would be to use round axles instead of the squarish axles we are using now. Another change would be the angle of the mouse trap so that we get the maximum pull with the spring.

Reflections on Sidnature 87

1. Some of the things that went on the mousetrap vehivle that we made are that once we had a design and a definate way to make it we had no problem getting it done. The vehicle was made over one weekend by Chris and I have not heard of any problems that he had incountered. The overall making and testing the vehilce went very well. I think that it was as good as it could have been considering amount of school hours spent trying to fix/make the vehilce.
2. I think that the only thing that would make the vehicle better is some careful planning. Meaning that the group should come together to decide the exact way that the vehicle will be built and when the vehicle will be built this way the vehicle will be done on that time, due to the fact that there is responsiblities lieing on that person to finish the vehicle by that time. Other than this advice I think that lube is a great additive to any vehicle, because the lube will help the vehicle travel farther.

Race Day

Our mousetrap vehicle that we used for the drag race (we changed the wheels). Photo courtesy Josh
Our vehicle did well in the long distance race. It went over 10 meters twice and it went 8.66 meters the other time because it went outside of the race track. For the drag race the vehicle went the required distance and we beat out one other team. We ended up being beaten by the winner Cam, Wes, and Florencia's group.
I think that the only way that we could improve our vehicle is to make the axle round so that the friction is reduced during run time. I would possibly cut the length of the string so that the vehicle wouldn't have the chance to wind back up on itself causing the vehicle to stop prematurely. Also I think that if the vehicle went straight that it might have gone farther.
If I could design a completely new vehicle I think that I would not use mini sticks because they are heavier than some of the other things that we might have used.
Other than these things I think that Sidnature 87 did very well. It wasn't a record breaker but it got the job done.

MouseTrap Vechile

Gluing the record to a Knex wheel. Chris is lounging in the background.

Mouse Trap Vehicle name is : Sidnature  87
    1. The sidnature is close to the needed effectiveness, it travels 6-7m a run for the long distance and 3-4m for the drag race. I think that Sidnature 87 is a very reliable vehicle. It works about 9/10 that is works really well and the other 1 is still a fairly good distance. The other parts of the vehicle all work really well and the ease of operation, is fairly well, it works no matter what it just goes a little better if you do it a certain way.
    2. The path of the vehicle was a slight fade to the right which we can easily fix by turning the vehicle slightly.
    3. The vehicle is traveling from 5-7 meters depending on the fatigue of the spring on the mouse trap. The car travels a lesser distance as the day continues.
     4. We are adding WD-40 or some other lubricant to the axles on race day so that friction will be reduced. Shortening the string, to reduce chances of it catching. adding a plastic film to the back of the mousetrap so that friction is reduced.

Paper Tower Challenge

This week we did the paper tower challenge as the title suggests.
This a tense moment, testing the towers strength. Blake, Quinton, and I

1. The part that I found most rewarding in the challenge is when we built our final tower because we could see our work coming together. The first tower didn't turn out so well because we hadn't taken  into account the fact that there were to many joints on the tower making it floppy.

2. The first tower was fairly close to our original idea but we saw the joint problem so we changed the whole idea and made a cylindrical tower, which was stronger than our first but not not as balanced.

3. I think that the best design from someones tower that we could  incorporate into our tower would be to make the base slightly wider because of the balance problem. Also, I think that our joint connecting the bottom of the tower to the top.
